If you and/or your employees are working remotely due to COVID-19, please consider these recommendations. It is imperative we keep a vigilant watch over our networks and data during these precarious times.
1. Require up-to-date firewalls and anti-malware on all devices, including cell phones and tablets.
2. Ensure all Internet connections are secure.
3. Keep work on a company-issued computer. Using a personal device increases the exposure to risks for the company. Company IT teams are generally more proactive about staying up to date with patches than people are with their personal devices.
4. Encrypt all sensitive data in your emails and on your device.
5. Do not charge other IOT devices to your work computer’s USB ports. Employees should not connect items other than keyboard, mouse, or monitor. If your company utilizes external drives or needs these ports for business functionality, make sure you follow the principle of least privilege.
6. Do not use public WiFi connections. Use a secure remote access VPN solution or your phone’s hotspot.
7. Do not use public USB charging ports. Bring your own USB chargers.
8. Do not leave devices unmonitored anywhere in public. Make sure that no one has a line of sight that can be used to see/steal confidential information on your screen.
